font size

Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyuarrived here Thursday for a three-day official visit to promote his country's relations with the South American nation.

Hui is scheduled to meet with Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, Interior Minister Jose Insulza and Foreign Minister Soledad Alvear.

"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the ties with Chile," he said in a written statement at the international airport here.

He said his visit aims to increase mutual understanding, reach more consensus and expand cooperation between the two countries. Despite the long distance between China and Chile, the friendship between the two peoples dates from a long time ago.

Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic ties with China. During the 33 years of diplomatic relations, especially in 2001 when full cooperation, lasting stability, equality and mutual benefit between the two nations were forged, cooperation of mutual benefit has been constantly expanding, he added.

The vice premier said he will exchange opinions with Chilean leaders on the two countries' relations, regional and international matters and Chile's socioeconomic development.

"I am sure that my visit will deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two governments and peoples, and promote the development of bilateral relations," he said.
