506 persons netted in HK anti-crime operation

Hong Kong police arrested a total of 506 persons in a three-day anti-crime operation mounted in Kowloon West Region, the police said on April 26.

The operation, code-named Windpipe, is aimed at curbing triad revenue generating activities which include vice activities, illegal gambling, dangerous drugs, pornographic and pirated DVDs/VCDs, copyright infringing goods, contraband cigarettes and unmarked oil stations in Kowloon West.

Co-ordinated by Kowloon West Crime Headquarters, the operation involved officers from the police tactical unit and the four districts in the region.

In the operation, the police seized around 97,500 sticks of contraband cigarettes, 178,000 pornographic VCDs/DVDs, 2,900 liters of unmarked oil, 2,200 items of copyright infringing goods and 84 unauthorized decoders. The total value of the seizures is estimated at about 3,130,000 HK dollars (401,000 US dollars).

The arrested persons, comprising 213 men and 293 women aged between 16 and 80, were detained for various offenses involving contraband cigarettes or goods, illegal gambling, managing vice establishments, possession of dangerous drugs, pornographic articles, unmarked oil and breach of conditions of stay.
