Portuguese President emphasizes UN's key role in resolving Iraqi issue

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaioon Sunday said the United Nations' key role in resolving the Iraqiissue would be the only way out of the current chaos.

Sampaio made the remarks while addressing the ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of Portugal's Carnation Revolution which ended the right-wing dictatorship and opened the door to the process of democratization.

Achieving peace and security in Iraq through legally political means would be the top priority at present in which the United Nations should play its key role, said the president, noting he was unable to find any effective ways otherwise.

He said any attempt to achieve an immediate victory in Iraq would only lead to the country's instability and do harm to its national integrity.

Resolving the Iraqi issue through legally political means wouldcreate the atmosphere in favor of the realization of Iraq's stability and security, he said.

Some 40,000 people took to streets in the capital to attend theceremony, local media reported.

On April 25 in 1974, some young officers of the country's forces overthrew the right-wing government which had ruled Portugal for nearly half a century. The movement, called CarnationRevolution, has led to democracy at home and independence for Lisbon's overseas colonies.
