OAS to send observers to oversee Dominican presidential elections

The Organization of American States (OAS) announced Monday it will send 35 observers to overseethe presidential elections in the Dominican Republic, according toreports reaching here from Santo Domingo.

The observers will arrive in Dominica this week in accordance with an agreement signed Monday between the OAS and the National Office of European Development Funds in the Dominican Republic.

The European Union (EU) donated 173,000 euros (207,000 US dollars) to finance the observation mission, according to Berta Santoscoy, OAS permanent representative to Dominica.

About 5 million Dominican voters are expected to cast ballots on May 16 to elect their next president.
