Chinese listed firms register soaring net profits in 2003
font size

Chinese firms listed on the domestic stock markets are facing a deadline at the end of this week to release their annual reports and so far information released is pointing to increasing net profits and better performance in some major sectors.

As of Monday more than 1,200 firms out of a total of about 1,300 listed on the two bourses in Shanghai and Shenzhen had already released their final reports. Statistics from the Shenzhen bourse show an improved performance of listed firms in last year, with over fifty percent growth in dividends per share and net profits. The most eye-catching performers are in sectors like metallurgy, mining, electricity, instrumentation, and transportation. But insiders warn of the declining profit share of large listed companies, whose increase in profits was only about 30 percent, in contrast to the 50-percent average.
