Indian election watchdog orders re-poll in 149 booths
font size

The Indian Election Commission on Tuesday ordered re-poll in 149 polling booths in five states following reports of large-scale election fraud and violence.

Repeat balloting will start at 7 a.m. local time Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh (93 booths), Uttar Pradesh (25), Assam and Karanataka (14 each) and Manipur (three).

However, the election watchdog is yet to decide on ordering re-poll in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Maharashtra.

Bihar and Jharkhand witnessed sporadic violence in the third phase of the general election Monday that left at least three people dead.

There will be no re-poll in Goa and Indian-controlled Kashmir, where no major incidents were reported during voting Monday, a commission official said.
