Annan says UN not intended to take over security in Iraq

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday that the world body is not intended to "take over" the security in Iraq.

"It is not our intention to take over security," Annan told reports at a press conference in New York when responding to a question how would the world body cooperate with the Coalition Provisional Authority if it can not control their forces.

"The UN is in Iraq today trying to assist with the political transition," he said. "I personally believe that the political process is to be the one of the most important and urgent tasks inIraq today."

"Brahimi and his team are there assisting with that process, and once an interim government or caretaker government has been established, we will work with them on the constitutions and elections," he said.

With Lakhdar Brahimi, Annan's special advisor, and his advanced team in Iraq, the world body is now going in to take control of the political situation. It, however, will not be able to take over the key area of security, as it has no control over the coalition forces.
