Dominican soldiers to be withdrawn from Iraq soon
font size

The Dominican Republic announced Thursday that the withdrawal of its 300 soldiers deployed in Iraq will end before May 5.

Dominican Armed Forces Secretary Jose Miguel Soto said the soldiers will be back, reports from the capital Santo Domingo stated.

The Dominican Republic, Honduras and Spain decided to pull their troops out of Iraq, in the wake of escalating combats between the resistance and the forces of the United States.

Soto did not detail which country would receive the 300 Dominican troops mobilized from Iraq.

Dominican President Hipolito Mejia, who is to seek reelection in the next May 16 polls, ruled out the immediate repatriation of the troops.

The Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Nicaragua contributed troops to the vigilance force Plus Ultra Brigade, a non belligerent contingent officially dissolved Thursday in Spain.
