Indonesian Supreme Court turns down Wahid's objection to medical test
font size

The Indonesian Supreme Court rejected Friday a request by president aspirant Abdurrahman Wahid to dismiss strict medical requirement imposed by the national commission for general elections (KPU).

"We will send the announcement (of rejection) to the plaintiff within one week of the latest," Supreme Court administration office head Yunanto Mahendra was quoted as saying by Detikcom online news service.

He said the verdict was made by three Supreme Court judges earlier Thursday.

Former short-lived president Wahid, who has impartial sight, has requested a judicial review over the KPU's ruling because the health requirement includes an eye test, considered as the stumbling block for his presidential bid.

Wahid himself has undergone the medical examination at the Army's hospital of Gatot Subroto here Thursday, but the result has not been announced.

He is nominated by the Muslim-based National Awakening Party (PKB) which now maintains as the country's third largest party with11.77 percent of total votes from the April 5 polls.

Wahid, 64, assumed presidency shortly after the 1999 general elections, in which his newly-founded PKB emerged as the third largest, but was impeached in July 2001 for incompetence by a special session of the People's Consultative Assembly.

The then-vice president Megawati Soekarnoputri took over presidency.

Since taking office until now, he has frequently visited hospitals for digestive disorders and even mild strokes. Following the Supreme Court verdict, Wahid's bid to reassume presidency now depends entirely on the result of medical examination he underwentThursday.
