font size

The United Nations Security Council authorized on Friday the establishment of an 8,000-strong UN peacekeeping force with a multidimensional mandate to help stabilize the situation in the violence-ridden Haiti.

Unanimously adopting Resolution 1542, the council asked the 3,600-strong multinational force now in Haiti to transfer authority to the UN force in 30 days starting on June 1.
