Firearms seizure shows system sound: HK official
font size

Hong Kong has a sound and rigorous system to control the import and export of strategic commodities, Hong Kong Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said Monday.

He added that a recent Customs' firearms seizure was not terrorism related. In a routine customs clearance and inspection in Kwai Chung last Friday, the Customs& Excise Department found two containers with sub-machineguns and magazines -- classified as strategic commodities inside.

Speaking to the media at the Central Government Offices Monday morning, Lee said the goods were on the way to the United States from Malaysia via Hong Kong. However, the exporter did not apply for an appropriate license with the Customs & Excise Department. Earlier, Assistant Commissioner for Custom &Excise Ferdiand Leung had said the department is still investigating the case.

He also stressed the incident had no relation to smuggling nor terrorism.
