font size

The United States embassy in Kampalaissued a security alert Friday to US citizens living in Uganda of rebel threat.

In a notice, the embassy especially warned the Americans in thenorthern and West Nile regions to be aware of the impending threatfrom the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.

"The US embassy in Kampala has notified all American citizens living in Uganda of an apparent threat directed against them by the Lord's Resistance Army," said the notice.

The embassy is monitoring closely the security situation in northern Uganda, and will not hesitate to inform American citizensof future developments, said the notice.

The US State Department Thursday also warned US citizens livingor planning to visit Uganda of threats to their safety from insurgent groups, particularly in the northern region near the border with the Sudan.

The warnings came after the LRA has reportedly issued a threat to all Americans living in Uganda.

The LRA rebels, based in the southern part of the Sudan, have been fighting an 18-year war to topple the Ugandan government.

Last week, the rebels killed at least 35 people and wounded 18 others in their attack on a camp for internally displaced persons in Odek in Gulu of northern Uganda.

Since March, the Ugandan government forces have been pursuing the rebels in the southern Sudan to flush them out after securing a green light from the Khartoum government.
