Chavez criticizes opposition for pursuing western democracy

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday criticized the opposition for pursuing western democracy.

Chavez was responding to the demands by the opposition that an international court or the Organization of American States (OAS) probe the accusations against the government.

The government has been accused by the opposition of being authoritarian and violating human rights.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a school in southern Caracas, Chavez said the opposition had not only demanded OAS intervention but also "international military intervention," referring to the United States.

"The only way to deal with an international intervention here is that if they come with rifles and cannons, we will fight back with rifles and cannons," Chavez warned.

Despite US denial, Chavez has repeatedly accused Washington of providing politicaland financial help to the opposition groups.
