Algeria suffers locust attack

As many as 13 out of 48 Algerian provinces have been attacked by locusts, which are widely spreading from the south to the north of the country.

According to a local report Saturday, the locusts, which come from Sub-Sahara, have made use of humid and windy climate and attacked some other North African countries, including Morocco, Tunisia and Libya.

To reduce economic losses, the Algerian government has earmarked 6 billion dinars (about 85 million US dollars) and mobilized 1,300 people to fight locusts.

At a meeting on locusts held in Mauritania recently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations urged the international community to provide at least 17 million dollars to northwest African countries to curb further spread.
