DPRK urges US to take practical action, abandon hostile policy

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has urged the United States to take practical action and abandon its hostile policy toward the DPRK for the upcoming working group meeting of the six-party talks.

"If the United States truly seeks a negotiated and diplomatic solution on the nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula, it should make a switchover in its stance and take trustworthy and practicalaction. This is the only way for the settlement of the nuclear issue," said a signed commentary in the DPRK's major paper, RodongSinmun, on Monday.

"If the United States takes a practical measure to abandon its hostile policy toward the DPRK, we will undoubtedly take a corresponding innovative and trustworthy step," said the commentary.

Late last month, the DPRK revealed it will discuss the proposal "reward for freeze" under any circumstances on the upcoming working group meeting to be held in Beijing on May 12.

The commentary stressed that there is no change for the DPRK inits basic stance on seeking a negotiated peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue. "The DPRK has kept exercising patience and flexibility and participated in the process of the six-party talksin a positive manner," it said.

"The success of the six-party talks and progress in the settlement of the nuclear issue will entirely depend on the US attitude," the commentary stressed.

Last August, China, the DPRK, the United States, Russia, South Korea and Japan held the first round of the six-party talks in Beijing aimed to resolve the nuclear issue.

The second round was held in Beijing in February and the six agreed to meet again by the end of June and decided to create working groups to resolve obstacles to future high-level talks.
