China to mark 14th "Handicapped People-Aid Day"

China Telecom donated 100 computersto the China Disabled Persons' Welfare Fund on May 11, to kick off the week-long programs of the China Disabled People's Federation to mark the country's 14th "Handicapped People-Aid Day".

China sets the third Sunday of May as the national day for helping people with physical or mental disabilities. This year, itfalls on May 16, with the theme of "Love My Brothers and Sisters and Assist Poverty-Stricken Handicapped People".

In the coming days, a number of enterprises and individuals areexpected to donate funds and goods in support of the country's 60 million handicapped population.

Over the past two decades, handicapped people in China have witnessed a remarkable improvement in their life as governments atdifferent levels have made great efforts to assist these people with the participation of all circles.

However, people with disabilities still face difficulties in employment, schooling and medical care, as well as protecting their rights. Deng Pufang, president of the China Disabled Persons' Federation has called for greater attention to the welfare of the handicapped.
