1st China int'l tunnel, underground space exhibition scheduled

The first China international tunnel and underground space exhibition and conference will take place in Shanghai from June 16-18.

The event will be jointly held by the Tunnels and Underground Projects Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society and Shanghai International Exhibition Center. It is the only tunnel exhibition recognized by the International Tunnels Association (ITA).

Chinese and foreign government officials, as well as representatives for Chinese and foreign tunnel construction firms,urban subway companies and institutes of planning and designing will attend the three-day function where the latest technologies and achievements will be exhibited and a number of symposiums willbe held, said the organizers.

China boasts 8,600 tunnels with the length exceeding 4,370 km, ranking the first in the world. Railway tunnels make up 3,670 km, and highway tunnels total 835 km.

In the forthcoming decade, the country will build more highway tunnels with the length totaling 155 km, said information from theChinese Ministry of Communications.
