Roh Moo-hyun to issue statement if reinstated
font size

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, who was suspended rights since mid-March, will issue a statement Saturday to express regret over the turmoil triggered by the unprecedented presidential impeachment if the Constitutional Courtrules favor him on Friday.

The South Korean Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday quoted an official of the Presidential Office as saying that Roh will deliver the statement to ask politicians to cooperate closely in anonpartisan manner to help revive the sagging economy.

In the statement, he will also express his willingness to embody national unity and co-prosperity in the wake of the great chasm opened by the unprecedented presidential impeachment, the official said.

Earlier Tuesday, South Korean Constitutional Court said it willannounce final ruling over the impeachment case on Friday morning.

The outgoing 16th National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against Roh on March 12, accusing him of election law violations, incompetence and corruption.

If six of the court's nine justices vote in favor of the impeachment, Roh will be immediately removed from the office and aspecial election will be called to elect his successor.

But if the court made a decision in favor of Roh, he will resume his presidential rights immediately.

Most of the local media reports predicted that the Constitutional Court would reverse the impeachment, because the victory of Uri Party in recent parliamentary general elections levied pressure to the court in respect of public opinion.

The pro-government party won 152 out of 299 seats, more than tripling its presence from 49 in the outgoing National Assembly.

Contrarily, the two main opposition parties that pushed the impeachment -- the GNP and the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), suffered defeats in last month's polls: the two parties saw their number of seats declined from 137 to 121 and from 61 to nine, respectively.
