CUHK to establish School of Law

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced Monday the establishment of the School of Law.

Vice-chancellor of CUHK Ambrose King said at a press briefing that since the rule of law is a major competitive advantage for Hong Kong and there is a growing demand for legal talents, the university is in the hope of cultivating legal talents by providing them with the best learning experience.

He said the School of Law will contribute to the learning and development of law through research, particularly in the context of the different legal and constitutional traditions of the region.

A planning committee for the School of Law will be set up underthe chairmanship of the member of the CUHK Council Dr Anthony Neoh.

Neoh said that since financial law is still immature in Hong Kong and the city is lacking in resources of trading law, the university will be focusing on these areas to meet the need of the society.

The degree of bachelor of laws program will admit students in 2006 and launch postgraduate programs in 2007 as planned by the university.
