Experts calls for further int'l anti-terrorism cooperation
font size

Experts and scholars of politics, military and police from 16 countries worldwide gathered in Beijing on Tuesday, appealing for further international anti-terrorism cooperation.

At the International Symposium on International Counter-Terrorism Situation and Cooperation, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People Liberation Army Xiong Guangkai said that terrorism, as the most obvious and practical threat in the field of non-traditional security, had become one of the global problems that people should face in a long time.

No country could deal with terrorism effectively by its own, and a new mechanism of international cooperation should be explored, said Xiong, who is also head of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies.

Yang Huanning, vice minister of public security, said China shares common interests with the rest of the world on anti-terrorism, and has undertaken effective international cooperation.

Ryutaro Hashimoto, former prime minister of Japan, put forward three principles for combating terrorism: do not offer places for terrorists to settle down, do not provide terrorists with terrorist means, and overcome the weakness of anti-terrorism campaigns by strengthening security measures.

Experts agreed that more consensus had reached in international anti-terrorism campaign after the terrorism attack on September 11in 2001, but more international cooperation was needed in this field.

The three-day symposium is jointly sponsored by the China Institute for International Strategic Studies and the Hotung Institute for International Relations.
