China has been active in promoting the modernization and internationalization of its arbitration system, said Chinese State Councilor Zhou Yongkang Sunday in Beijing.

During his meeting with Gerold Hermann, chairman of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and Ulf Franke, chairman of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (IFCAI), Zhou highly valued the roles that the two international organizations had played in the development of international arbitration.

Zhou said the Chinese government had always attached high importance on the legal construction along with social and economic development. And foreign economic and trade activities had scored marked progress.

He said China would strengthen cooperation with the two organizations to push forward the development of international arbitration.

Hermann said he appreciated the development of China's arbitration system and hoped to strengthen cooperation with China.

The 17th ICCA conference was opened here Sunday.

The ICCA was established in 1969 and it is the first time for it to hold a conference in China.
