Chinese gymnastics team will not use the national Olympic trial results as the sole standard to decide the Olympics lineup, in order to avoid being embarrassed by such accident as the Thorpe issue.
Chinese head coach Huang Yubin told Xinhua on Friday that the results of the ongoing Olympic trial, slated for May 14-17, will not figure out the Olympic lineup although it will be an important reference.
"Gymnastics is special compared to other sports and more likely to have unexpected accidents," Huang said.
"If we judge (a player) only by one match, we might lose those potential Olympic champions who have real strength to take gold but unperformed in the trial."
China has named a 26-strong squad, consisting of 11 men and 15 women, which will be finally reduced to six men and six women.
Whatever happens in the trial, Olympic champion Li Xiaopeng is set to have a place in the final lineup. The high-profile gymnast took three gold medals in last year's world championship and have two difficult maneuvers named after him.
Australian swimming super star Ian Thorpe failed to qualify for the 400 freestyle at the Australian Olympic trials in March after falling into the pool before the start. The multiple world-record holder qualified for the 100 and 200 freestyle, but his best chance for a gold medal is the 400. The month-long saga was finally ended after his teammate Craige Stevens withdrew from the event to make way for Thorpe.
