The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will train Uruguayan policemen and other personnel in how to deal with nuclear terrorist attacks, local media reported Monday.

A group of IAEA experts are scheduled to arrive soon to start the training, said Alvaro Bermudez, an official of the National Nuclear Technology Directorate (DINATEN).

Uruguayan policemen, customs agents, firemen and DINATEN officials will attend the training.

The training project was agreed between the Uruguayan government and the IAEA last week when an IAEA delegation visited the South American country and expressed concerns over the possible use of nuclear materials in terrorist attacks, Bermudez said.

The training is a preparatory step for deploying radioactive material detecting equipment at Uruguay's border crossings.

The devices, donated by the IAEA, will be used to detect nuclear materials, such as plutonium and uranium, so as to preventtheir entry into Uruguay.

Uruguay is located between Brazil and Argentina, two countries with nuclear capacities.
