CAAC sends team to investigate plane crash in Urumqi

Liu Shaoyong, deputy director of the General Administration of the Civil Aviation of China (CAAC), led a team Tuesday to Urumqi in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, to investigate the crash of an Azerbaijani cargo plane earlier in the day.

The team was expected to arrive around 6:00 p.m. local time.

The dead bodies of all seven crew members aboard were found, including six of Ukrainian nationality and one of Azerbaijan nationality. No casualties or property loss on ground were reported. The fire was put out and Urumqi International Airport resumed operation in the afternoon.

The cargo plane was flying from Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, to Baku of Azerbaijan via Urumqi. It took off from Taiyuan airport at 5:50 a.m. and landed in the Urumqi airportat 9:10 a.m. However, it crashed in forests 10 kilometers from the runway two minutes after it took off from the Urumqi airport at 10:48 a.m.
