Arab nations called on the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to condemn and stop Israel's mass demolition of Palestinian houses in the Gaza Strip.
At the request of Arab nations, the 15-nation council started an emergency consultation on the Middle East Tuesday afternoon, during which a draft resolution drafted by Arab nations was circulated.
The draft resolution denounces the recent large scale demolition of homes committed by Israel in the Rafah refugee camp bordering Egypt, and demands Israel completely cease such practice.
It also condemns acts of terrorism but does not mention any specific Palestinian militant group. Naming Palestinian groups responsible for acts of terror is usually a precondition for winning support from the United States.
It remained unknown whether the US would employ a veto on the draft.
UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said earlier that some 2,197 people were made homeless in the first half of May after Israel destroyed191 buildings throughout the Gaza Strip.
Israeli troops started new house demolition operations in Rafahon Monday and have so far left 20 Palestinians dead in the process.
