Chirac: Human rights must be respected in war on terror

French President Jacques Chirac said Tuesday that human rights must be respected and relevant laws abided in the fight against terrorism.

Chirac made the remarks at a meeting with non-governmental organizations and local officials on the upcoming summit of the Group of Eight (G-8) scheduled for June, his spokeswoman, Catherine Colonna, said.

"I will insist on the absolute necessity of the respect for human rights and the rule of law in our fight against terrorism," Chirac was quoted as saying.

"Facing the challenge to our democracies, it is only through the respect of our own values that we will win the battle against terrorism," he said.

Leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States are scheduled to hold a summit at SeaIsland, Georgia, the United States, from June 8 to 10.
