British Prime Minister Tony Blair met with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder at his Downing Streetoffice on Wednesday night to discuss the draft EU Constitution and a new UN resolution on Iraq.
A spokeswoman for Blair's office said their talks, which lasted more than two hours, were constructive and positive.
They "obviously discussed the forthcoming European Council meeting and the progress of negotiations on the constitution treaty," she said on condition of anonymity.
"They meet and talk regularly. This is part of a series of contacts between the prime minister and other European leaders in the run-up to the European Council in June," she said. However, she declined to reveal more details.
The spokeswoman also said Blair updated Schroeder, whose government opposed the US-led war with Iraq, on progress toward the handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government on June30.
London and Washington are pushing for a new UN Security Council resolution to cover the handover and according to the spokeswoman, the two leaders had "a positive, constructive exchange of views" on this topic.
EU leaders hope to sign the EU Constitution, which aims to streamline decision making in the newly enlarged bloc, when they meet in Brussels on June 17 and 18.
