Australia to open diplomatic mission in Libya

Australia will open a diplomatic mission in the Libyan capital of Tripoli as the first step toward establishing an Embassy there in the near future, the Australian government announced Friday.

The decision recognizes the many positive changes in bilateral relationship since the restoration of diplomatic ties in July 2002,said a joint statement by Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Trade Minister Mark Vaile.

During a visit to Libya from 19-20 May, Downer informed Libya's government of the new mission and reinforced Australian government's support for Australian companies seeking to do business in Libya' s oil and gas sector.

Downer also welcomed Libya's decision to abandon weapons of mass destruction and join the international community in the fight against terrorism.

The new mission will be headed by an Australian trade commissioner, establishing a visible and positive Australian trade profile in Tripoli.

Providing consular services to more and more Australians livingand working in Libya, as a result of the growth in Australian trade and investment, will be an important function of the new mission.

The new diplomatic mission will also enhance Australia's capacity to broaden the relationship with Libya apart from strong commercial ties, according to the statement.
