25 civilians killed by rebels in northern UgandaThe Ugandan army has disclosed that the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have killed at least 25 people in the northern district of Gulu. Army spokesman in the north Lt. Paddy Ankunda was quoted on Saturday by local media as saying that the killings took place on Thursday evening when a group of rebels attacked Lukode, a camp in Bangatira sub-county in Aswa county, about 20 km west of Gulu town. The rebels set ablaze over 180 huts in the camp during the attack which started at 6:00 p.m. (1500 GMT). This is the second attack by the rebels on the Gulu camps within a week. On Sunday evening, almost at the same time, the rebels attacked Pagak internal displaced persons camp in Lamogi sub-county and killed over 30 people. Ankunda said, "Lukode is not a displaced persons camp but a settlement with scattered household within this small Ugandan army detachment. The population is about 325 with about 60 households in the scattered settlement far away from the government army defense." Source: Xinhua |
