The floods caused by torrential rains in Haiti and the Dominican Republic this week have killed 1,960 people as more than 1,000 bodies were discovered in a Haitian town.

According to reports from the Haitian capital of Port-au-Princeon Wednesday, the death toll in Haiti stood at 1,660, including the 1,000 found in Mapou, a poor rural town in the southeast part of the country.

In the Dominican Republic, 300 people were confirmed dead, mostof whom were killed in the disaster in Jimani near the border withHaiti. A river there overflowed its banks before dawn while peoplewere still sleeping.

Currently, rescue workers are working hard to find bodies covered by mud and water, said the reports.

Aid has been provided to the flood-hit areas by the peacekeeping troops in Haiti, who are there to restore order afteran armed revolt ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in February.
