French President Jacques Chirac launched Friday a new charge against unilateralism, which, he saidleads to an dead end, without specifying the United States but in a clear allusion to its difficulties in Iraq.
"The multilateralism is our time's need," said Chirac at the round table dedicated to multilateralism at the third summit between the European Union (EU) and Latin America in Guadalajara in Mexico, according to the text pronounced at the close-door meeting and published by Chirac's office.
The multilateralism resulted from the globalization of increased interdependence, but also some pains that could be only controlled by general measures, he said.
"Security problems, which pose the questions of resort to violence are from now on global and must be treated in a multilateral framework to have a legitimate treatment," he said.
"It is enough for your conviction to see the risk that the countries nearly posed on the world's balance or the dead end led by the unilateral action," he added.
After rejecting all involvement of the United Nations before and after the war in Iraq, Washington has tried to involve the world body in the power transfer to Iraqi people scheduled for June 30.
