AIDS Report: a tale of two sisters
font size

Xiong Linguo is thirteen-year-old girl. She lives a normal life, in a caring family.

Watching her play with her friends, few would guess her secret, and the past she has left behind. When she was still very young, her parents died of AIDS. But a kind-hearted family took her in. Now she has a new life. Her adoptive father is Yang Yusheng, a farmer in Lixiangtang village in Shangdong Province. Linguo even has a new name-- "Yang Jing". It was two years ago that Yang Jing arrived from neighboring Henan Province.

Many of the villagers were curious about this new addition to the family. But as time went by, they quickly came to accept the young girl, and praised the Yangs for their kindness.

A villager in Lixiangtang said, " This is a good deed. We all like the girl very much." Another villager in Lixiangtang told the reporter, "I want to adopt an AIDS orphan too. I believe they will grow up to be good children."

The Yangs love their new daughter. "When Yang Jing joined our family, life changed a lot. I'm a lucky man. Now I have a son and a daughter," said the father.

But Yang Yusheng sometimes worries his daughter could face discrimination. Yang Jing loves her new family, and her new life.

Little Yang Jing said, "I like it here. And my parents treat me very well. Yang Jing says when she gets older, she wants to go to college. She wants to help other orphans, just like herself. But it's also hard. She still misses her mother and father. Most of all, she misses her little sister.

Xiong Linye is just 8 years old. She used to live in Donghu village, the home of her parents before they passed away. Now she lives with her grandfather Xiong Baoming and aunt Wang Xuezhi. Both of them are HIV positive.

Wang Xuezhi, a farmer in Donghu Village, Henan Province, said, " My husband and I both have AIDS. We cannot support both sisters. So we had to send one away."

Linye misses her sister. But she loves her family. Already she feels responsible for them. She helps out in every way she can. Aunt Wang loves Linye, and says she will never give her up. But she is growing weaker day by day. Her biggest worry is who will take care of Linye when she passes away.

Two sisters, still thinking of each other despite being so far apart. For Yang Jing and Linye, the future is uncertain. But at least they have someone to depend on.
