Ghazi al-Yawar, newly-named Iraqi president, Tuesday called for "full sovereignty" to be restored to his war-torn country.
Yawar made the call at his first press conference after being named earlier Tuesday as president in the interim Iraqi government which will take over on June 30.
Yawar told the reporters that "we the Iraqis also look forward to being granted full sovereignty through a (UN) Security Council resolution to enable us to rebuild a free, independent, democratic and federal, unified homeland."
Yawar was appointed earlier on Tuesday as the new Iraqi president after Adnan Pachachi turned down the post, an IGC member said.
The interim council had originally been scheduled to nominate the new president on Monday, but the announcement was delayed due to wrangles over two candidates, namely 81-year-old Pachachi and young Sunni tribal leader Yawar.
Pachachi was strongly favored by the United States and UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, while Ghazi gained much backing from the IGC itself.
The US-led coalition authority will hand over power to an Iraqi government on June 30.
