China's top science think tank helping influence country's future

Chinese top scientists, or academicians, have offered their ideas or suggestions on China's major critical development issues based on work in their special fields of research and scored good outcome over the past two years.

Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), made the remarks in the on-going conference of academicians in Beijing on June 2.

The CAS, China's top science think tank, held its 12th conference of academicians here Wednesday. CAS President Lu said he believed that the consultations and appraisals CAS gave to Beijing's decision-makers have helped to shape the country's future.

In the past two years, he noted, the CAS has completed research reports on ecologically-vulnerable areas such as a western drought zone, loess plateau, karst topography areas and Qinghai-Tibet plateau.

Besides, it also put forward proposals on issues including population aging, e-commerce, basic sciences, AIDS intervention, coastal zone pollution and biodiversity of Hainan province.

"CAS's research has provided a solid foundation for the decision makers. We will encourage more top scientists to offer ideas on critical development issues and set forth timely proposals with scientific value," said Lu.
