Did you know that even when you turn off your home appliances like TVs and computers, they are still consuming electricity if they are plugged in?
If not, you can learn more information like this during this year's energy conservation week from June 6 to 11. With the theme of "Electricity Conservation", a series of activities on saving electricity will be held in Chinese communities, schools and other public places, aiming to increase the public awareness of energy conservation in China.
Zhao Jiarong, an official from the State Development and Reform Commission, told a press conference on the energy conservation week that electricity supply has become a bottleneck of China's economic growth, and China will not only strengthen its electricity power, but also take ways to encourage the whole country to save electricity and thus to help ease the pressure from electricity shortage.
During the coming week, knowledge on electricity conservation like energy-saving product introduction and standards of energy conservation will be widely spread through newspapers and communities and schools. Seminars will also be held among relevant agencies, companies and experts.
To save electricity this summer, Beijing will make circulars toll of its hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, airports and railway stations, calling on these public places to lower by even one or two degrees their air conditioners, which will save a lot of electricity for the city.
Much knowledge like this should be known among the public, noted Zhao. When not using home appliances, the plugs should be pulled out from the outlets, which has been proved to be an effective way of saving electricity.
Zhao said when buying home appliances, families should pay more heed to the energy-saving marks of the products rather than the prices.
Even two refrigerators of the same cubage but different energy consumption level will have a possibility of saving 0.65 degrees of electricity daily by choosing the right product, said Zhao. As a result, a total of 237 degrees will be saved for one refrigerator within one year.
Since last year, China has faced growing electricity demand amid its fast economic growth, with two-thirds of its provinces short of electricity. The situation worsened in the first four months of this year, with the electricity shortage expanded to 23 provinces.
