Int'l energe conference ends with political declaration

The International Conference for Renewable Energies closed in Bonn on Friday by passing a Political Declaration which sent strong political messages in meeting the big challenge of this century.

Ministers and government representatives from 154 countries acknowledge that "renewable energies combined with enhanced energyefficiency, can significantly contribute to sustainable development, to providing access to energy, especially for the poor, to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing energysecurity."

They reaffirm their commitment to substantially increase the global share of renewable energy in the total energy supply, according to the declaration.

The representatives reiterate "their commitment to halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty by 2015" illestrated in the UN Millennium Development Goals by expanding the access and supply of energy to developing countries, the declaration said.

The representatives underline the need for coherent regulatory and policy frameworks that support the development of thriving markets for renewable energy technologies, it said.

The representatives commit to undertaking the actions and plansthey have submitted for inclusion in the International Action Program and reporting to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
