Nation to expand use of renewable energy resources
font size

China on Friday said it would expand the use of renewable energy resources by launching a national energy strategy and constituting a law on renewable energy use within two years.

In a commitment to the International Action Program (IAP) on the final day of the Bonn conference on renewable energy, the Chinese government pledged to increase the country's installed renewable energy generating capacity to about 60 GW by 2010, about10 percent of the total power capacity,

The contribution of renewables will rise further to 121 GW by 2020, about 12 percent of the total, the IAP said.

Within two years China plans to institute a law to ensure a role for renewables in the national energy strategy, it said.

The law is aimed at removing barriers to the renewable energy technologies and establishing a financial guarantee system for developing renewables.

The IAP includes some 165 items of voluntary actions and commitments by governments, the United Nations and other international organizations.
