A large amount of ammunition believed to have been left by invading Japanese troops during World War II has been discovered in north China's Hebei Province, local authorities said.

The ammunition, which consists of 102 metal objects including 26 air bombs, two mortar bombs, 63 grenades and antitank grenades, and 11 detonators, was dug out in early May when the Zunhua City Education Bureau was demolishing and reconstructing its office building.

The city government immediately asked the police to seal off the scene, evacuated local people, and reported it to the local army.

Preliminary investigation by army experts showed that the ammunition was left over by invading Japanese troops during World War II.

According to some local elderly people, the site used to be a headquarters of the Japanese troops.
