China inputs vigor to world's growth: Michael Dell
font size

Michael Dell, who leads the world's PC sales champion Dell, found himself under the spotlight of the capital city of China immediately when he arrived here. He told the media confidently that the remarkable growth of Dell's China business and market space would extend their sales and market to an array of Chinese major cites, as well as more than 100 second-line cities with areas affiliated with them.

Mr. Dell attributed his impressive success story in China to the country's economy in a fast lane and its great efforts on honoring WTO commitment, reducing its trade barriers, and attracting foreign investment. A magnate of vision, he commented that China's economic development would not only change the social structure of the country, but also pump vigor into the world economy. He was convinced that with WTO deepening and positive factors increasing in China, more possibilities would be available to companies like Dell.

When asked about his company's target at 80 billion USD sales for the next 5 years, he answered with a smile that his company was marching steadily toward their ambition of 60 million USD annual turnover, a pace faster than expected. And there was no way for him to set a timetable for 80 billion USD.

Talking about China's information industry as advisor to US President on science and technology and IT pundit for World Economic Forum, Mr. Dell foresaw incredible changes in IT sector in the next decade in China where he thought was a market of indefinite potential. The IT sector is in massive scale and involves very wide fields. A lot of technologies and concepts from IT has already been part of our daily life. However, in his view, new technologies will emerge with the further development of the information industry.

Mr. Dell didn't agree that PC would disappear one day in the future. In this aspect, he made an analog with state-of-art communication technology which would sharpen the function of phones instead of eliminate them. By the same token, he argued, PC would not disappear. It may integrated as an equipment and such equipment, big or small, would co-exist. In fact, he declared, PC sales represent the most powerful ingredient in their mix.

He unveiled Dell's China strategy. After a palm PC was launched in the market here for the first time at the beginning of the year which proved to be a success, more consumer products would come at the end of this year. He thought changes were taking place in consumer electronics and digitalization was the trend. In China, Dell buys more liquid crystal displays than any other producer.

More than 400 of the world's top 500 have business in China, the most important market in the world. Given this, Dell stressed the only way to make a stronger foothold here was to keep learning, to acquire the first-hand information about customers' needs, and to offer customized products and services at the best prices with the state-of-art technologies.

Mr. Dell recognized that China offered good resources, infrastructure and talents, ranging from production and call centers to procurement for Dell. This, he said, even benefits his company's global vision.

Mr. Dell reiterated his firm commitment to the Chinese market. Their success, he concluded, lies in bringing their direct selling model into new products, new services and new global market, and offering best value to customers.
