Chinese top legislature to inspect animal disease preventionThe National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee will send a special team to inspect the work of animal disease prevention in the country, said NPC Standing Committee Vice-Chair woman Uyunqimg in Beijing Thursday at a meeting. The outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) last year and bird flu this year have made the public more concerned about cross infections between humans and animals, she said. At least 160 animal diseases can be spread to humans, Uyunqimg said. The team will go to Shanghai, Hunan and Xinjiang to inspect implementation of the animal disease prevention law and the animals and plants quarantine law, and ask local provincial-level people's congresses in Tianjin, Jilin, Jiangxi and other regions to inspect, according to sources.
