Ten people were wounded and 14 arrested in clashes between English football fans and the Portuguese police in southern Albufeira on Monday night and Tuesday early morning after a match of the European Championship, police sources said Tuesday in Lizbon.

The captain of the Portuguese National Guard (GNR), Taveres Belo, said 10 men were taken to Albufeira's health center, 7 of them English, after the English national team was defeated 2-1 by France at La Luz Stadium.

Authorities also arrested 12 English citizens, a Russian and a Portuguese.

Manuel Jorge of the GNR said the conflict began near midnight on June 14 with little incidents that led to the invasion of the streets by 200 English fans who blocked the traffic and attacked GNR effectives with bottles, chairs and tables.

"As of that moment, the intervention of the orderkeeping forces was necessary, and they were backed by forces on horse working in coordination with the infantry," Manuel Jorge said.
