Powerful typhoon hit Japan, disrupting traffic

A powerful typhoon is landing on western Japan Monday morning, disrupting air, land and sea travel on and near the main Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.

At 6:50 a.m. (2150 GMT), winds of 180 kilometers per hour were reported in eastern Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Typhoon Dianmu, the season's sixth, hit the prefecture's western region with winds gusting over 90 kph at around 6 a.m.

Many flights to and from southern, southwestern and western Japan have been canceled, according to the agency.

The typhoon was located about 90 kilometers south of Cape Ashizuri, moving north-northeast at around 30 kph.
