Multinationals vie for charity pioneers in China

A campaign was launched Tuesday to select Charity Pioneers from multinational companies in China to promote the development of charity undertakings in the country.

The campaign, involving foreign enterprises registered in Chinaand Chinese enterprises registered abroad, will select enterprisesas Charity Pioneers and present some special awards in the following four months.

"It will be an intense exhibition of multinationals' charity donations to the Chinese public and finally become a flag in China's charity cause," said Xu Rujun, from People's Daily, which organized the activity with the China Children and Teenagers' Fund.

Sim Wong Hoo, chief executive officer of Singaporean Creative Technology Co. Ltd., announced a proposal to all multinationals inChina.

"Please send the idea of 'Charity Pioneer' to friends around you", and "explore more cooperation with charity institutions," said the proposal.

Sim Wong Hoo called for the multinationals to contribute to China's charity cause.

His company donated 20 million yuan (2.4 million US dollars) Tuesday to the China Children and Teenagers' Fund for children's education in China.

Though having been in China for about ten years, this is the first time Sim's company made such huge donations. "We will shift the focus of charity from Singapore to China and give more help tochildren's education here," said Sim.

At Tuesday's ceremony, the China Children and Teenagers' Fund received donations worth 109.66 million yuan (nearly 13.3 million US dollars) in currency and 63 million yuan (7.6 million US dollars) in goods.

Twenty world famous multinationals in China joined the activityas the first group of participants, including Amway, Ericsson, Siemens, and Kodak.
