font size

Police officers arrested several people following England's loss to Portugal in the quarter-finals of the 2004 European championships, police said on Friday.

A group of Portuguese fans were besieged in an inn in Thetford, southern England, by English fans for more than two hours. Local police arrested 11 English people for public order offenses and a number of police officers were injured in scuffles.

Heraldo Viegas, 29, one of the Portuguese businessmen who manages the pub, was stunned by the violence.

Another 17 people were arrested in Hertfordshire for a variety of offenses including assault. Seven more people were arrested in Boston, northern England.
