Both Chinese girls embraced success on June 28 (London Time), the seventh day of Wimbledon 2004. Sun Tiantian and Gaston Etlis from Argentina beat Juan Ignacio Chela and Gisela Dulko, both of whom from Argentina, 2-0 (6-3, 7-5) to enter the last 16. Yan Zi and South African Chris Haggard reached the second round with a 2-0 (7-6, 6-4) win over Tom Vanhoudt from Belgium and Jelena Kostanic from Croatia.

Thanks to her ranking 25th, Sun Tiantian paired with the 18th Gaston Etlis. As the 14 seed set by the organizer, Sun and Etlis were directly sent to the second round previously.
