Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara stressed Tuesday the importance of President Bashar al-Assad's recent visit to China, the state-run SANA news agency reported.

Shara made the remarks while briefing the cabinet on the historical visit, SANA said.

The Syrian president made a four-day state visit to China on June 21-24, the first of its kind since the two countries established relations in 1956. Assad met with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior officials during the visit.

Shara asserted that the visit contributed to boosting cooperation between the two friendly countries in the political, economic, cultural and tourist domains, SANA said.
