Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pakistan prime minister-elect on Tuesday pledged to continue policies of President Pervez Musharraf for political and economic stability and enlightened moderation which have put Pakistan on the path of economic progress.
"My government would launch crusade against terrorism, injustice, lawlessness, poverty and unemployment," Hussain told the National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, after he was elected new Prime Minister.
He will be sworn in the country's 19th Prime Minister on Wednesday.
The prime minister-elect said the country needs national consensus and consultation to face internal and external challenges.
"We will have to get rid of the negative tendencies of leveling baseless allegations in politics," Hussain said.
He paid tributes to former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali who for the first time in the political history of the country resigned from the office and proposed his name.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain also thanked members of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League and allied parties for reposing confidence in him.
Makhdoom Amin Fahim, the opposition candidate, speaking on the occasion said in view of the situation confronting the country, there is need to ensure supremacy of parliament, safeguarding of the 1973 constitution and strengthening of the democratic process.
Meanwhile, President Musharraf has summoned the National Assembly to meet at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Wednesday for the vote of confidence of the Prime Minister-elect.
