font size

To strengthen regional cooperation is one of the important parts of China's diplomatic policy, said Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Thursday in Jarkarta.

The Chinese government will actively support and participate in the regional cooperation to achieve common development with its neighbors, he said after attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus three foreign ministers meeting.

Li said at the meeting that the situation of Southeast Asia on the whole is keeping a momentum of peace, development and cooperation.

The free trade arrangement of various types among the countries has made progress, intra-regional trade has increased, and the political situation has remained stable, as well as the relations among the East Asian countries, said he, adding that the understanding and identification among the people of the region have deepened, and their will to enhance cooperation has grown even stronger.

On the issue of increasing "ASEAN+three" cooperation, Li said China supported various discussions to explore ways and means for that purpose, such as those on ASEAN Community. In this process, Li said, he supported the leading role played by ASEAN.

He said a free trade arrangement should be the emphasis of regional cooperation in the near and medium-term. With this as a chance, he added, to promote the market of East Asia and push forward the economic structure in northeastern and southeastern Asia.

Li said he supported the idea of conducting an East Asia Summit at an appropriate time to help move forward cooperation in East Asia and implement related policies and measures for the purpose.

He said he supported open regionalism, and hoped to improve and strengthen connections and coordination among countries in the region.

Li also briefed his counterparts on the six-party talks on the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula held in Beijing recently. He said foreign ministers of the parties think highly of the role China played in the talks and hope the work will make continuous progress.

Li also held talks with his Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda. Both spoke highly of the development of relationship between the two countries and hoped to promote further cooperation.
