Sudanese government ready to settle Darfur crisis: minister
font size

A comprehensive plan has been drawn up to implement President Omar Bashir's vision on settling the Darfur crisis in western Sudan, Interior Minister Abdel Rehim Mohamed Hussein revealed Sunday.

Hussein, who is Bashir's representative in the the three western Darfur provinces, made the promise at a press conference in Sudanese capital of Khartoum, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Hussein told the reporters that the plan makes sure that all villages in the three provinces in the region come under the control of the state with no village left isolated.

He explained in details that police will secure all towns and villages, including streets and roads, before the left inhabitants return to their homes.

Foodstuffs and medicines will be available for up to three months before the return of the locals, he added.

The minister, however, denied reports that the government had any plans to disarm the pro-government Janjaweed militias in the region, adding all Arab and non-Arab tribes in Darfur have militias and have arms.

"We can only legalize the carrying of arms by incorporating the various militias into the police and army units" and gradually the number of people who will be carrying arms outside the regular forces will dwindle, he said.

A revolt against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government broke out among indigenous ethnic minorities in Darfur in February 2003. Pro-government Arab militias there blamed for a wave of killings of indigenous groups.

More than 10,000 people have died in the region and more than a million others driven from their homes since then, it was reported.

The United Nations has described the Darfur problem as one of the worst humanitarian situation in the world.

Recently, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and US Secretary of State Colin Powell have separately toured Darfur to pressure the Sudanese government to bring under control the Janjaweed militia at the centre of the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region and ease the situation there.

Following stern warnings to Khartoum from the international community, the Sudanese government has announced steps to solve the crisis.
