Five years have passed since the reorganization of China's 10 military group corporations, important breakthroughs have been made in the scientific research and production of weaponry, thus making contribution to rejuvenating science, technology and industry of national defense, according to information released on July 6 by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, which is in charge of the industrial management of China's military enterprises.

Am official with the Commission said that over the past five years, important leaps have been achieved by the 10 military industrial groups in the development and production capacity of hi-tech weaponry, and a large number of weapons of high technological content, good quality and performance have already been put into use by the army. All the military industrial groups have strengthened the construction of high-tech weaponry development and production capacity in compliance with the requirement of armament, thus pushing technical equipment level to a new stage and bringing about a qualitative leap in the scientific research and production capacity, level as well as the overall strength of military industry.

There is also an important breakthrough in the scientific and technological innovation of national defense undertaken by the military industry, and specific plans, such as the basic scientific research of national defense, technical foundation and key laboratories of national defense science and technology, are pressed forward steadily. The 10 military industrial groups have also stepped up the training of management talents, specialized technical talents and skilled workers, thanks to these efforts, there have emerged a great many leading talents who are in the prime of life and with both political integrity and ability.

In the meantime, the reform of military industry is also carried forward steadily, and the economic profits of the enterprises have increased obviously: by the year 2002, the entire military industry achieved a slight favorable balance, thus reversing the situation in which the whole industry suffered losses for eight consecutive years, and by the end of last year, all the military industrial groups had made profits of about 4 billion yuan; so far there have been 39 military industrial enterprises which have listed stocks, and the No.2 group company of China Aviation Industry is now planning to be listed after reorganization in its entirety; the tempo of military- civilian hi-tech industry is accelerated, and economic strength is enhanced prominently.

On July 1, 1999, the original administrative general corporations on the five fields, namely nuclear, aerospace, aviation, shipping and weaponry, were reorganized into 10 military industrial groups: China National Nuclear Corporation, China Nuclear Engineering Corporation, China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, China Aviation Industry Corporation, China Aviation Industry Corporation��,China State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China Weaponry Industry Corporation and China Weaponry Equipment Corporation
